How Good Are Taylor’s ‘Bad Blood’ Moves

We Asked A Karate Expert

Could  Taylor Swift REALLY defend herself with those fancy high kicks?

I think it’s been firmly established that Taylor Swift’s cameo-packed video for “Bad Blood” was certainly badass. But the question now becomes: Just how good are Tay and Co. at actually kicking said ass?

According to Goju-Ryu master Sensei Chuck Merriman — who has served as bodyguard for the likes of KISS and Diana Ross (and, full disclosure, this reporter’s karate teacher) — not so good.

“I watched the video a couple of times and looked at it from a technical viewpoint and from a choreographer’s viewpoint,” Sensei Merriman told MTV News. “In either case, there wasn’t much action to judge from — however, technically, it was substandard. From the choreography angle I thought it was just so-so. If I was Taylor Swift, I’d ask the stunt coordinator for my money back.”

Merriman’s biggest issue with the video was that the actors were not actually executing any moves to speak of, and were, rather, just performing fight-like sequences for show.

“I used to teach Broadway dancers in New York and their kicking and karate kicks are two different things,” he said. “They kick for visual — they want it to look nice instead of practical. What I took from this is it’s just a visual thing — imitating the technique rather than actually doing it.”

If Tay is planning to make a sequel to the original video, Merriman suggested she start taking classes — specifically in Taekwondo. “They stress kicking and kicking is very — even in tournaments — kicking gets more points than punching because it’s more visual,” he said. “In other words, a high kick to the head is more spectacular than a punch to the body. And Taekwondo is very geared towards that musical interpretation.”

He suggested that Tay take classes with Jhoon Rhee, who famously put martial arts to music in the form of a kind of ballet.

“It’s impressive — but certainly not from a practical standpoint, actually learning how to defend yourself and everything,” Merriman said of the martial art. “I would say definitely defense-wise, she should learn traditional Okinawan karate.”

Perhaps from a certain Goju-Ryu master who was once a bodyguard for KISS?

Insurgent tops US box office but Sean Penn's Gunman backfires

Fantasy sequel Insurgent has debuted at the top of the US box office, earning $54m (£36m) in its opening weekend.

Starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James, it took slightly less than the first instalment, Divergent, which opened last year to $54.6m (£36.7m).

Film company Lionsgate said it was "pleased" with the result, and noted there was little competition for the film's teen audience over Easter.

Elsewhere, Sean Penn's action movie The Gunman fired a blank with US audiences.
The star could only muster $5m (£3.3m) for the tough tale of Congo mercenaries, which he co-wrote and co-produced.

It had been hoped the film would capitalise on the audience for the "geriaction" genre - popularised by Liam Neeson's Taken series, with which The Gunman shares a director, Pierre Morel.
However, reviews were resoundingly negative. The Atlantic's Christopher Orr called it "a dull, generic
retread, made far worse by Penn's self-seriousness as an actor, by the banal political pieties he's grafted on as producer and co-writer, and by the presence of a pitifully retrograde female lead role."

Thanks to a slow weekend at the cinema, The Gunman managed a number four chart position, beaten by Insurgent, Cinderella and Liam Neeson's own action thriller Run All Night.

Cinderella, which had been last week's chart topper, had a strong second week, taking a further $34.5m (£23.2m), bringing its total earnings to $122m (£82m).

Female audience boosting figures

Rounding out the top five was Kingsman: The Secret Service, starring Colin Firth, which dropped a couple of places but still made $4.6m (£3m).

"Over the past couple of weeks, films driven by the female audience have done much better than films driven by the male audience," said box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
"But that's all going to change because Furious 7 is on the way."

The seventh film in the street racing franchise, The Fast and the Furious, is due out on 3 April. It has been dedicated to the memory of Paul Walker, who died in a car accident while the film was in production.

His scenes were completed using a mixture of CGI and body doubles - some of whom included Walker's own brothers.

Here’s Your Extended First Look At ‘Furious 7′

You may have already seen the trailers (one, two and three), watched the TV spots, and sobbed looking at this heartbreaking poster, and now we have your first extended look at Furious 7. And Dominic Toretto and his crew of ex-street car racers — excuse us, we mean his FAMILY — aren’t backing down from this fight.

The latest “Fast and the Furious” film finds Dom (Vin Diesel), Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) and the rest of the gang at war with ex-special ops Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). Shaw is out for blood after Dom and co. killed his little brother Owen Shaw in Furious 6, and he’s hunting them down one by one. (RIP Han.)
Universal Pictures has also debuted a brand new poster for the action flick. This one features cars parachuting out of an aircraft, which is an actual thing you can look forward to in the movie. Clearly, Furious 7 director (and franchise newbie) James Wan was looking to make a statement.
'Furious 7' New Poster
There are plenty of things to look forward to in Furious 7 — like that insane fight between The Rock and Statham — but we’re also anticipating one hell of a punch to the gut given the unfortunate death of star Paul Walker. And his last ride with his “Fast” family is sure going to be an emotional one.

Furious 7 speeds into theaters on April 3.
