How Jones has become Man Utd's mainstay

It is not so long ago that Phil Jones was becoming Manchester United's forgotten man but he showed again in Sunday's 1-0 win over Tottenham that he can be the mainstay of their back four.

Injuries meant he did not play for United's first team from 2 January until the start of November and, in that time, they signed Eric Bailly, and also used Daley Blind, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo at centre-back.

I was left wondering where Jones would fit into Jose Mourinho's plans when he returned to fitness.

His ability and potential were not in doubt but his problem was the same as it often has been since he joined United aged 19 in 2011 - a lack of consistency, either in staying fit or in playing in one position for a sustained period.

Jones was at the point in his career where he had to play, and deliver. So far, he is doing both.
The time to assess him fully on that will be at the end of the season but, since coming back into the team, he has been in absolutely unbelievable form.

What we are seeing now are the benefits of him being given the same role in the centre of defence and, over the past seven games, he has proved that he has the ability to become United's number one centre-back.

'Mourinho has found a defensive partnership that works'

Striker Harry Kane had only one shot for Tottenham at Old Trafford on Sunday, which was off target from outside the United area

In the past there were always the accusations that Jones was a little bit rash - that he would dive into silly tackles and get himself injured.

But I have not seen that since he has come back into the team and there seems to be a bit more maturity to his game.

What has also helped him is having a regular partner at the back, and being part of a settled back four.
Throughout his managerial career, once Mourinho finds a defensive combination that works then he doesn't seem to change it.

At United, Matteo Darmian is his equivalent of Cesar Azpilicueta at Chelsea - a right-footed left-back - and Antonio Valencia has probably been one of the best right-backs in the Premier League this season.
Mourinho has found a partnership that works in the centre too, with Jones and Marcos Rojo.

The beauty of that is that they are a right and left-footed pairing and I also like the way they concentrate on defending and winning their duels rather than hitting 60 or 70-yard passes or dribbling out from the back.
It works. You cannot say they have not been tested together yet because they have come up against three of the best strikers in the league in the past few weeks.

Jones and Rojo kept Harry Kane completely quiet on Sunday, the same as they handled Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez and Everton's Romelu Lukaku, and they stopped all three of them from scoring.

'Herrera is United's fireman'

Bailly is going away to the Africa Cup of Nations, which starts on 14 January, with Ivory Coast and he is going to find it really difficult to get back in the United team before then.

Apart from him not playing at the moment, however, I think Mourinho feels he has found his best team with the line-up that faced Everton and Spurs.

They look strong at the back and they have got a fantastic balance in midfield with players who can win the ball and use it.

A big part of that is Ander Herrera, who has been absolutely outstanding. He does not have the flair or Pogba or the class of Carrick but having him in the team makes both of them better.

Herrera is the type that you don't know the true value of until you play or work with him because, from the outside, it may not appear that he scores or makes enough goals, or plays the killer passes.

But I would describe him as United's fireman because he is always exactly where he is needed on the pitch.
He set up United's winner against Tottenham but, quietly and efficiently, he did a lot more than that. He
covered more ground than any other player, made the most interceptions and tackles and, if you look at his touch map, then he touched the ball in every area of the pitch.

Herrera made 49 touches against Spurs, including 25 in the opposition half, and covered 11.14km. He made five tackles and four interceptions, gaining possession for his side 11 times

You can almost say to him 'you go wherever there is trouble, and sort it out'. He is not only a tough player, because of his background at Athletic Bilbao, he is a clever one too.

'United heading in the right direction'

Yes, Sunday's win over Spurs was only United's second in the past nine league games but some of the criticism of Mourinho has been getting over their form is very unfair.

They only lost one game during that time and people were trying to look at their draws as disasters when they were nothing of the sort.

People might say I am biased as an ex-United player but I am just saying 'look at things from a balanced point of view'.

United are sixth in the Premier League, into the last 32 of the Europa League and in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup. That is no disaster.

Last week's performance at Everton was probably their poorest in the past couple of months but generally, I have been watching them and thinking they are heading in the right direction.

After watching their draw with Arsenal on 19 November I thought this was a much-improved United team with a system that worked.

They look like they are going to attack, create chances and score goals.
Not only that, they play an exciting and attractive style of football that I associate with United and one that, as a fan for 39 years, I want to see when I go to Old Trafford. Mourinho deserves credit for that, not criticism.
Phil Neville was speaking to BBC Sport's Chris Bevan.

Jose Mourinho does NOT look happy on shopping trip

He does NOT look happy on shopping trip to Victoria's Secret with daughter Matilde

They say the Mour the merrier, but these shots tells a different story as José Mourinho trudges round the shops with daughter Matilde.
The Man United boss looked a bit off form – not unlike his team – as he was seen at trendy London stores Victoria’s Secret and Hermès.
While Matilde, 19, waltzed along happily, “Special One” José, 53, looked desperate to be substituted.
He did help carry her gear. So he’s bagged something this season.
Though with his side set for a clash against Tottenham today, he may have reason to be pensive.

A victory at Old Trafford will move Spurs nine points clear of United, and leave Jose's team 16 points off top spot.
But despite his season not getting off to a good start, an unlikely source has come to his defence.

Pochettino told The Mirror this week: “For me he is one of the best managers and it’s normal; big club, big manager, great manager.

Ronaldo celebrates Madrid's Super Cup win

Ronaldo celebrates Madrid's Super Cup win

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo was quick to celebrate his team's UEFA Super Cup extra-time triumph after sitting out the clash in Trondheim.

Working his way back to full fitness following a knee injury sustained during Portugal's Euro 2016 victory last month, Ronaldo watched from home as Madrid overcame 10-man Sevilla 3-2 thanks to Dani Carvajal's stunning 119th-minute winner on Tuesday.

With the match - pitting the Champions League winners against the Europa League victors - seemingly headed for penalties, Carvajal produced a fine solo goal to deliver yet another trophy to Madrid.
And Ronaldo took to social media shortly after the final whistle, posting a picture of his Madrid team-mates holding the Super Cup trophy, accompanied with the caption: "Champions".

Gareth Bale, Toni Kroos, Pepe and Keylor Navas also sat out the fixture at Lerkendal Stadion.
Madrid will now turn their attention to a friendly against Reims on August 16, before the open their LaLiga campaign at Real Sociedad five days later.

Jose Mourinho demands promise he will be next Man Utd coach

RUMOURS: Jose Mourinho demands promise he will be next Man Utd coach

Jose Mourinho wants a written assurance from Manchester United that he will take over next season as manager, according to The Sun.

The Portuguese trainer has long been linked with the Old Trafford job, but a public vote of confidence in Louis van Gaal from Sir Alex Ferguson has raised speculation the current manager could continue in his post.

As a result, the ex-Chelsea man reportedly wants a firm promise from the United board that the job he has been waiting for since being sacked at Stamford Bridge remains his.

Questions about THAT Real Madrid dressing room photo after El Clasico win

9 questions about THAT Real Madrid dressing room photo after El Clasico win

Dressing room selfies are often a really bad idea.
Just ask Jamie Carragher for his views on Arsenal players taking congratulatory pictures after a game and you will see why many in the game frown upon it.

However, when you have (deep breath) revitalised your season, won the biggest game in domestic club football, ended your biggest rivals' 39-game unbeaten run, beaten probably the best team on the planet on their own patch… and done all that with 10 men?

Well, then it's more than acceptable. That's why the picture you can see above, from inside the Real Madrid dressing room after their 2-1 win against Barcelona, is an exception to the rule.
However, the post-Clasico image does have us concerned for a number of other reasons…

1. Why is Sergio Ramos topless but wearing the armband again, when he clearly removed it on the field after being sent off?

Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos is sent off

2. Does Marcelo realise what a vulnerable position he'd be in if he turned around?

For the love of God, Marcelo… DO NOT LOOK BEHIND YOU

3. Is Cristiano Ronaldo on tip-toes?

He does make a habit of trying to make himself bigger, after all…

4. Did Ronaldo make them wait while he stripped to his underwear?

"Just hold on a sec, guys."
"Cristiano, we've got to…"
"I SAID HOLD ON ON A SEC!"

5. Does Ronaldo keep a massive collection of old-fashioned Action Man toys in his home gym, to use as inspiration while he does his latest set of 10,000 sit-ups?

Action Man figures on sale at the Action Man convention in 1996

6. Is Sergio Ramos in the process of punching Luka Modric in the face?

7. Has Jese been taking lessons from David May?

The former Man United defender is the king of getting a prominent spot in a photo which celebrates something you weren't THAT involved in.
Manchester United team and manager Alex Ferguson

8. How skinny are Dani Carvajal's legs?

The right-back has clearly been skipping leg day in the gym. Unlike Xherdan Shaqiri…

9. What does it take for Toni Kroos to be REALLY happy?

Cheer up, Toni. You've just won the biggest game in domestic club football. It really is OK to let your hair down…

Klopp: For Spurs it will be like a cup final

Jurgen Klopp the visit of Tottenham Hotspur will be like a cup final for the north London side, who can put pressure on Leicester City at the top of the Barclays Premier League with a victory at Anfield.

Spurs are five points adrift of the leaders Leicester, who are in action on Sunday at home to Southampton.
Klopp has stressed the importance of Saturday's match occasion for both teams, and hopes Liverpool can meet the challenge of the “hard fight”.
"Now everyone knows how strong Tottenham are and it's an important game for both sides,” the Liverpool manager said. “Liverpool v Tottenham is never a birthday party. It will be a hard fight.

"We're looking forward to a really, really important game for both sides, and maybe for Tottenham it's something like a final.
"They need to win to put pressure on Leicester. We need to think about it in the sense that it's like a cup final, so we have to be ready.”

Klopp’s first match at Liverpool was a goalless draw in the reverse fixture at White Hart Lane six months ago, and Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino is wary of the quality the German and his team possess.
"Liverpool have a very good team, very good players and Klopp is a great manager,” Pochettino told tottenhamhotspur.com. “We expect a very tough game.

"It’s a battle. We need to fight, we need to show we are better and fight for a big objective. First of all, we need to perform and show we deserve to win."
Pochettino is likely to be without Jan Vertonghen (knee) and Erik Lamela (muscle) at Anfield, although Toby Alderweireld is expected to be fit after a stomach problem.

For Liverpool, Saturday's match has come too soon for Lucas Leiva, who is recovering from a thigh injury. Roberto Firmino will have a hamstring tested to see if he is fit after missing the defeat at Southampton. Christian Benteke and Divock Origi both suffered knocks on duty for Belgium, but while the former will not feature, the latter has recovered.

We must win every match, says Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is targeting eight straight victories to close out the season, which he believes will give his side "more than a chance" of winning the Barclays Premier League title, beginning with Saturday's home match against Watford.

The Gunners, who have managed two wins in their last nine matches across all competitions, are 11 points behind leaders Leicester City with a match in hand, but Wenger is refusing to give up without a fight.
"If we win all eight games, we have more than a chance to win the league, but our target is to win the games," he said.

"We are depending on Leicester City and nobody knows how they will go in the last seven games. They have seven games, we have eight. What is important is that we play our eight games with complete commitment and passion, and see where we finis."

Dele Alli will be '10 times better', says Milner

Tottenham star Dele Alli can be "10 times better" than he is at the moment, according to Liverpool midfielder James Milner.

Alli has starred for the Premier League title contenders this season and is set to play a role for England at Euro 2016.

Milner has been impressed by the 19-year-old, but is wary of the teenager being put under too much pressure.

"We want to be careful now and make sure we don't put too much on him," he told reporters.
"We know how good he can be but we have seen it time and time again, 'this player is going to be the next world-beater for us' and there is a lot of pressure there.
"We want to take it off him and let him go out there and not worry about it, worry about playing football and keep improving because he is still young.

"As good as he is at this moment he can be 10 times better and he will. He has a great attitude and will keep working hard and keep improving but we need to take that spotlight off him and let him develop and improve.
"We have seen how good he is and he will only get better I'm sure."

Milner and Alli are set to meet on Saturday as Liverpool host Tottenham, who are five points off league leaders Leicester City, at Anfield.

The 30-year-old Milner believes Alli is in good hands at White Hart Lane, speaking highly of head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
"The manager seems brilliant there and he is going to be one of the biggest influences on him," he said.

Yaya Toure set to quit Manchester City

Yaya Toure set to quit Manchester City

Yaya Toure is preparing to leave Manchester City with the midfielder in talks with European clubs, according to his agent Dimitri Seluk.

Seluk had warned City that Toure, whose contract expires at the end of next season, would depart the Etihad Stadium unless he was offered a new deal before the end of the season.

But no new contract has been forthcoming for the Ivory Coast international ahead of Pep Guardiola's arrival, with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Juventus reportedly interested in signing the 32-year-old.

"From this moment we start to discuss with different clubs about Yaya going there in the summer," Seluk told The Sun.

"City don't do anything concrete. Yaya has given everything for the club and we don't feel that this situation is the right way to show how much they appreciate him."

Toure has scored six goals in 26 Premier League appearances this term, as City cling onto the fourth and final Champions League qualification spot.

Chad kumvunja moyo Mkwasa

Barcelona 'change normal life to art'

Barcelona have "two or three players who transform normal life into art"

The Gunners went out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage for the sixth straight season after a 5-1 aggregate loss against Barcelona.

The La Liga side's front three of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez were all on target.
"In the final third, Barcelona's passing accuracy and creativity is exceptional," said Wenger.

'At 1-1, Barca were wobbling'

Arsenal missed numerous chances in the game, with Danny Welbeck hitting the woodwork and Alexis Sanchez twice coming close.

Having also gone out of the FA Cup in a shock defeat against Watford last weekend, the Premier League is Arsenal's only hope of a trophy this season. They are currently 11 points behind leaders Leicester with a game in hand.

Wenger feels the result could have been different if they managed to add to Mohamed Elneny's crisp effort in the second half.

"I felt, at 1-1, they were wobbling and insecure," said Wenger. "We could not take our chance to score the second goal to put ourselves in a good position.
"We created plenty of dangerous situations and the quality of our game was good. When we lost the second goal, we lost the edge."

'Pleasure for others, suffering for me'

Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez have scored 111 goals between them this season
Messi's delightful dinked finish took his tally to 37 for the season in all competitions, while Neymar netted his 28th and Suarez now has 46 after his superb volley against the Gunners.
"We played against a team who has the best strikers I have seen," added Wenger. "The three together are absolutely exceptional.

"From nothing, they can create a chance, especially Messi. He didn't miss a first touch, no matter where the ball came from.
"At some stage in our sport, we must admire art and they have two or three players who transform normal life into art. I respect that and I believe it is pleasure as well. For me, is it suffering."

How Arsenal's season has unravelled

Back in early January, Arsenal fans were dreaming of a trophy-laden season.
The Gunners were top of the Premier League, safely into the Champions League last 16 and making progress into the FA Cup fourth round.

But conceding a late leveller at Liverpool on 13 January proved the catalyst for a dreadful run of form.
Wenger's men have managed to win just two of their nine Premier League matches since, leaving them well adrift of leaders Leicester.

If falling away in the title race is not hard enough for Gunners fans to take, their misery has been compounded by a double cup exit in the space of four days.
Failing to overcome a two-goal deficit against Barcelona may not have been a surprise. But, following Sunday's home quarter-final defeat against Watford, it has done little to ease mounting pressure on Wenger.

Arsenal cushion no comfort for Barcelona

A 2-0 lead at home against Arsenal will "not be easy"

  • Luis Enrique warns Barcelona to be wary of Mesut Özil and Alexis Sánchez
  • Hosts unbeaten in 37 matches in all competitions; won last eight games
  • Holders aiming for tenth straight quarter-final
  • Lionel Messi's double gave Barcelona a 2-0 first-leg victory in north London
  • Laurent Koscielny in Arsenal squad after recovering from calf problem
Possible lineups
Barcelona: Ter Stegen; Alves, Mathieu, Mascherano, Alba; Busquets; Rakitić, Iniesta; Messi, Suárez, Neymar.
Out: Rafinha (knee), Sandro (hamstring), Piqué (suspended)
Doubtful: none
Misses next match if booked: none
Arsenal: Ospina; Bellerín, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Monreal; Coquelin, Elneny; Campbell, Özil, Sánchez; Giroud.
Out: Ramsey (hip), Čech (calf), Cazorla (Achilles), Oxlade-Chamberlain (knee), Rosický (thigh), Wilshere (calf/shin), Chambers (not in squad)
Misses next match if booked: Monreal, Özil, Campbell, Giroud

Luis Enrique, Barcelona coach

[The 2-0 win in London] was a good result but it doesn't change our approach. It is still an open match, our opponents are dangerous and we need to play very well to go through. Sometimes the match looks perfect because of the result, but there is always room for improvement. That's why football is so complex – 11 players have to do the same things at the same time.

We have to try to handle quality players like Mesut Özil and Alexis Sánchez. We want to keep the ball as much as possible to avoid counterattacks – it will not be easy, but lately we have being doing that well. Alexis is a very important player for Arsenal and his national team. He is a quality player, fast and attacking, and he has improved his game since he went to Barcelona. We have to be careful with him.

Arsène Wenger, Arsenal manager

The key for us will be a solid defensive performance. We have to attack and that suits us. We will do that knowing that the magicians of Barcelona will demand a good defensive performance from ourselves. Koscielny is important for us because he has lots of pace and Barcelona are good on the counterattack.

We have won almost everywhere in Europe, but still not here and we need to do that now. Barcelona are in a good position, but we have a chance. Our approach wasn't too bad [in the first leg]. We just lost our shape a bit after half-time and got caught on the counterattack.

I don't think the football gods owe us anything, but I owe a lot to football. We want to come here and give a positive performance. We will play with passion and commitment and show our talent.

Zabaleta concerned about Kompany and Otamendi injuries

Two centre-backs leave the pitch in the first half and their Argentine right-back admitted the loss of the duo tempered the celebrations of progressing in Europe

Pablo Zabaleta conceded Manchester City's celebrations over reaching the Champions League quarter-finals were subdued after centre-backs Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi suffered first-half injuries in the goalless draw against Dynamo Kyiv.

City were grateful for the 3-1 lead they carried over from the first leg of the last-16 clash in Kiev after influential captain Kompany suffered a recurrence of his troublesome calf injury in the seventh minute.
Otamendi sustained a dead leg in a challenge with Oleg Gusev to depart after 24 minutes of a listless first half, with Kyiv unable to sufficiently test City's hastily thrown together defensive duo of Eliaquim Mangala and Martin Demichelis.

Afterwards, City boss Manuel Pellegrini said Kompany would miss a "minimum of a month", while Otamendi remains hopeful he can feature in Sunday's crunch Manchester derby.
"We were happy because we went through to the next round but obviously [less so] when you see team-mates [injured] - especially Vincent, that is the fourth time he has got an injury this season with the same problem - and also today Nico," Zabaleta said.

"When you lose two big players like this, you want to celebrate but sometimes you just think about them and you feel a little bit down because they are two important players for this team.
"We will see how the medical staff assess the players and see how bad those injuries are. Hopefully not too bad and they can have a speedy recovery."

The excitement levels increased marginally after a dour first half at the Etihad Stadium, with Jesus Navas striking the post for City before a late Dynamo rally was as fruitless as it was futile.

"Of course we are very proud, we made history. We will see the draw on Friday," said Zabaleta, who urged his colleagues not to fear any potential clash with the heavyweights of European football.

"We need to believe in this team that we have players good enough to compete in this competition.
"We need to repeat again another good performance and see if we can go through in the next round."
But first up for the long-serving right-back is the familiar passion and intensity of a derby against Manchester United, with City aiming to safeguard their place in the top four and a four-point advantage over Louis van Gaal's side as the season enters its final stretch.

"Of course, I've been here for a long time. I know this is a special game," Zabaleta added.
"From Wednesday, a few people will be talking about City making history in the Champions League but the main thing will be people talking about the derby - that is normal in this city when a big game is coming at the weekend.

Arsenal make new bid for Leicester starlet Ben Chilwell

Arsenal have made a fresh bid to sign Leicester teenager Ben Chilwell.

Arsenal have made a fresh bid to sign Leicester teenager Ben Chilwell.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger wants to get the deal done in this window rather than risk losing the highly-rated left back.

England Under-21 starlet Chilwell, 19, has also been a target for Liverpool and Manchester City, although Leicester are battling to keep him and have offered him a new deal.

Arsenal had a £3m bid turned down last summer but are back in again as they look to bolster their squad.

Newcastle legend Steve Harper joins fierce rivals Sunderland

Newcastle legend Steve Harper joins fierce rivals Sunderland

Sunderland have completed the controversial signing of Newcastle legend Steve Harper.

The veteran goalkeeper spent 20 seasons at St. James’ Park before joining Hull on a free transfer in 2013.
Most of his tenure was spent as back-up to No.1’s Shay Given and Tim Krul but he remained a popular figure among the Toon faithful.

Harper has now moved to Sunderland on a short-term deal until the end of the season though and immediately deleted his Twitter account, amid abuse fromNewcastle fans.
“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind, how it all happened,” explained Harper.

Liverpool

Liverpool have reportedly opened talks with Ligue 1 outfit FC Lorient regarding the transfer of versatile left-back Raphael Guerreiro.

Italian outlet Calcionews24 say dialogue has begun, although the move would be likely to take place over the summer rather than in the current window.

The 22-year-old has played a lot of games in France despite his tender years, appearing in 34 top-flight fixtures in each of the last two seasons.

He has played in 18 Ligue 1 matches so far this term, scoring once to add to his seven league strikers in the last campaign. Napoli, Inter Milan, Roma and Juventus are all also allegedly interested.

Man United leading race for teen hotshot

Manchester United are also reportedly closing in on one of Europe’s hottest teenage properties.

Benfica starlet Renato Sanches has attracted interest from across the continent, but the Red Devils have moved into pole position to land his signature, according to theDaily Mail.

United are apparently keen to tie up a deal this month to prevent a summer bidding war, and are hopeful they could sign the 18-year-old attacking midfielder for around half of his £60million buyout clause.
Lopes could be loaned back to the Portuguese giants until the summer if the deal goes through.
